“I want you to hold me accountable” — Barack Obama

Because of the rapid development of the internet during the last ten years we’ve seen what has been described as the democratization of scrutiny. It used to be left to the establishment press to keep track of a politician’s promises and performance. Today, there are thousands of citizen-journalists all across America who keep track of exactly what each of them says and does. But things aren’t always as simple as that.
Tracking Barack Obama’s Campaign Promises List
If a presidential candidate doesn’t keep his promises, but the times are good, it’s probably not going to really matter. Yet if a presidential candidate keeps his promises, but they don’t work, it most certainly will matter. And in the long run, political legacies and reputations will be defined by results — not simply a tally of their promises kept or broken.

Just found your website from a Google search for “campaign promises.” I had no idea that Obama had made so many promises. If he’s able to keep half of them he’ll be doing good. But that’s okay with me. Half of them are bad anyway!

As for the “good promises,” however, it depends on whether the endorsement of Obama is large enough so that he is not breaking his neck, because failed heroes are enough to mourn. Of this, we should be aware. Obama’s changes must convince many who are critical of him, including the military and secret services – who can’t be “overlooked” if attacks threaten. And the financial crisis, although it might have facilitated his electoral victory, will certainly not ease the government work and change, because the needed funds are missing.

I agree with you about the death penalty. Obama and the Democratically controlled House and Senate should abolish the death penalty as early in their term as possible. It seems likely they should have the power to do so then, if they really want to.

I’d also like to see Obama assign special Justice Department committees to make sweeping investigations across the entire nation’s prison / jail system to find out who was unfairly arrested, who might have received an unfair trial, and who was unjustly convicted?

A campaign promise is NOT always a “Promise”
NewsGuy (guest) 8 Dec 2008, 18:09 -0-700

I like the idea of a list of things to see how Obama follows through on them.

Two things you MUST keep in mind, though:

(1) Him mentioning something he is planning on doing if he becomes president is NOT a promise — it is a statement of intent. There is a world of difference between a promise and an intention.

(2) Even a promise is not a guarantee that he will make them happen. If he fights for their introduction into Congress, and then attempts to get them passed, but they are shot down, then he followed through with his “promises” and plans.

The only things that should be listed in your list are basic policy absolutes that he defined during his campaign or continually made an unequivocable certainty of.

The expectations for Obama are much higher than any President ever nominated. That small minority of McCain supporters were very racist, you know the ones that shouted terrorist, and referred to his name being associated with terrorist.
If this were Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, the issues of his promise, and what he campaigned on would not be brought up, until he gets into office.
As I read the comments on this website, the issue at hand would be the idiot who is in office now…You know the uniter not the divider. Ask yourself this. How many presidents eat spam? This man is so close to the real people than any other president that has sat in the White House.
For anyone who pre-judges Obama before he is the actual president is a fool. The smart thing to do is to wait and see what kind of President he will be once he gets into office.

Obama is human; the only thing that would prevent his promise to America would be situations that come up that would prevent him from doing so.
